A Definitive Guide To Every Type Of Pimple

A Definitive Guide To Every Type Of Pimple

And how to treat them.

Not all pimples are cut from the same cloth. Some are big, red and angry (like cysts) whereas others are annoying but short-lived, appearing and disappearing in the space of 24 hours.

So because knowledge equals power, we’ve compiled a guide that looks at every type of spot: what they are, where they come from, and how to treat them. Think of it like a pimple glossary you can save next time a breakout appears (so you can treat accordingly).

CYSTS

If acne was a food chain, cysts would sit at the very top. Cysts form in the much deeper layers of the skin, and occur when a blocked pore becomes infected. Unfortunately they are painful, and quite slow to heal. Many won’t come to a head either, so it’s best to simply leave them alone (picking = scarring).

Instead, try treating it daily with the Skin Control Breakout Bar. The salicylic acid and activated charcoal will help with clearing the pores and reducing its lifecycle.

*If you experience ongoing cysts, we suggest chatting to your doctor or dermatologist about an long-term treatment plan.

BLACKHEADS

Blackheads occur when pores become clogged with sebum, skin cell buildup and bacteria. In the case of blackhead though, the pore remains open and the oil has oxidised, making it a darker colour. This is why they’re also referred to as open comedones.

To treat blackheads, you want to use targeted treatments that will remove oil and dead skin cells. The Skin Control Blackhead Blaster is made to lift away gunk and clean out the area, making them a great weekly treatment to keep congestion at bay.

WHITEHEADS OR PUSTULES

Whiteheads, also called pustules or closed comedones, happen when sebum, dead skin and bacteria build up and up until a small white pimple erupts. These are superficial blemishes, but picking and squeezing can still create scarring. Instead, pop a pimple patch on it to reduce swelling, absorb fluid and prevent further infection.
