Five Very Useful Hacks For Treating Maskne

As wearing a face mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19 becomes the norm (and in some cases compulsory), an unwelcome side effect is ‘maskne’.

Maskne is the term used for acne and breakouts that crop up around the lower half of your face from wearing a mask. Essentially, friction, moisture, trapped dirt and bacteria get trapped in the space between your mask and your skin, creating the perfect breeding ground for congestion. Cute.

While there’s not a lot we can do about masks, we do have some sort of control over our skin! Especially when you have the right tools and ingredients on hand. So here we’re compiled five of our best tips for preventing and clearing maskne, from undercover spot treatments to pandemic-approps hygiene habits.

Tip One: Wash Your Mask

Sounds like a no brainer, but we really can’t stress enough how important it is to wash your masks! Daily is best, but if that's a stretch (because who does laundry daily) try using an antibacterial mist inside after every wear, and leave it to dry out overnight.

Tip Two:  Try A Pimple Patch

Masks, while annoying, come with a few silver linings. Preventing airborne pathogens is one, but another is being able to wear a pimple patch without anyone noticing. Pimple patches will not only treat your spots during the day, but keep them clean and protected from germs/sweat/dirt and the mask itself.

Try Skin Control Pimple Patch AM or the XL size to treat a few spots at once (available at Chemist Warehouse, Woolworths, Big W, Coles, IGA or skincontrol.com.au)

Tip Three: Cut Back On Makeup

Some makeup products can irritate pimples and clog pores, so if you’re wearing a mask why not skip out? It will help with breakouts and save you time in the morning (so go ahead and snooze that alarm).

Tip Four: Double Cleanse

Double-cleansing after wearing a mask all day long is the best way to remove dirt and oil that have accumulated, and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. Try starting with an oil to break down skincare, grease and dirt, before using a treatment cleanser with pimple-fighting ingredients. The Skin Control Breakout Bar has salicylic acid, charcoal and tea tree to reduce bacteria and unclog pores, for skin that’s calmer and less inflamed.
